We watched Stephen King's The Mist this afternoon. I know, I know; you're supposed to watch scary movies at night. I like sleeping, thank you. :P I like Stephen King's horror movies because they preserve a crucial element that seems to be missing from most mainstream horror: downtime. Horror movies that constantly keep you on edge are silly to me. If I want endless adrenaline, I'll go to a theme park.

(On Day 2 I got aggro'd by real life problems, so I'll make up that planned activity later in the month.)

Cupcakes! I had some orange vanilla-flavored buttercream left over from last week, so I dyed a small portion black to make faces. I used a tip #5 to get nice, thick lines. The adornments on the cupcakes include: crosses, pentagrams, ghosts, vampires, angry faces, scared faces, dead faces, and jack-o-lanterns.

This is a nifty idea to get myself into the Fall season! But, instead of specifically Halloween-related activities, I'm going to use my October blog time to explore all kinds of Fall-themed things that I've been meaning to try including, but not limited to:
  • Branching out on my bread baking skills and recipes
  • Trying more Fall fruits/vegetables
  • Knitting socks
  • Creating reusable Fall/Halloween decor
I'll of course be doing typical October activities like pumpkin-carving, watching scary movies, and going to the fair as well. I do have a few projects in the works that may span several days or even a week (such as sock knitting), but as long as I work on something daily, that will satisfy my goal. I won't be blogging every day, but I'll be sure to document with photos.

Let the festivities begin!

Remember that tomorrow is "Talk Like a Pirate Day"!

As everyone knows I've been a fan of Nine Inch Nails since The Downward Spiral was released in 1994. Last night was NIN's last show in Los Angeles at the Wiltern. (I would have liked to have been there, but it just wasn't in the cards.) Many fans shared their memories late last night as the show played. I wasn't up that late, and thankfully so because the setlist was over four hours long! So this morning I took some time to reflect on my favorite memories that Trent has left me with (in no particular oder):

  • 2009: Receiving candid tweets from Trent at all hours of the day on my iPhone. (I'm glad I bought a cell phone this year.) It was good to hear those random thoughts. It's something I've always wanted to be a part of, and it was even better that he had finally fallen in love and shared it.
  • The 90's: Subscribing to SPIN magazine in the 90's just to collect TR interviews. I had quite the SPIN collection for years.
  • June 9, 2009: Asking TR if he received my nautilus to which he responded, "Oh, yes I did. Thank you." And he hugged me. The way a maelstrom struck as NIN played The Day the World Went Away during soundcheck. Being able to watch TR from behind the stage and feel the energy of the crowd--everyone singing Sin was incredibly powerful.
  • Labor Day 2008: Driving 8 hours to Kentucky for my first NIN show. Hearing The Great Destroyer live with an amazing light show.
  • 1994: Blasting Broken on my parent's stereo while they weren't home.  Something I Can Never Has as I slept on a calm, breezy night with open windows. Explaning to mom that "Nine Inch Nails" wasn't a euphemism.
  • 2007: Not fully appreciating The Fragile (album) until 8 years after its release. It was just my time.
  • 1996: Buying Quake just because TR did the soundtrack, and realizing that it was a great game.
  • 1995: Being told by some punk at school that I wasn't a "true fan" and subsequently besting him at NIN knowledge.
  • Early 2009: Receiving "the gift" of HD footage and soundboard recordings from three Lights in the Sky shows and reliving that tour every day on my commute to and from work.
Trent, you said you'd make more music, and by all means please do. You've been with us for 20 years, and I hope you'll make music for another 20 or more. Please take the time to enjoy the life you're about to build, too. My advice? Your engagement proves you're already working on it: The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return. Thank you, Michael Trent Reznor.

12:31 Ah, I'm getting so caught up on work that I forgot how satisfying it is to work on side projects.

16:31 I suppose a brief history of time takes a while when it's sent through US Postal mail. Who would dare misplace Stephen Hawking? *tsk tsk*

I tried to watch The Golden Compass last night after reading the His Dark Materials trilogy this summer. I only got through the first 20 minutes before I had to turn it off. The first time I watched the movie a few years ago, it was ok since I had no preconceived notion of the book. However, I now realize that they changed too many details and butchered the plot line way too much for my tastes. Even the small details that were changed got on my nerves after a while. (Why would they change the name of the usurper to the Bear King throne? It didn't make sense!) I happily spent my evening watching more Stark Trek TOS.

Doh!

I got so distracted this morning before work that I left the iron on. I would have called my in-laws to run over and switch it off, but they left bright and early on vacation. I would have driven back to do it myself, but my coworker comes in later now, so I have to be here to help open the store.  I had to call Dad so he could go out there and do it, but it will be another 30 mins at least before he gets there, and the iron has been on since 6:30. This has me so wound up I can't focus on anything at work.

Think the cats have turned it over to burn my house down yet??
